That's a Wrap!!

Last Day of School!

Well the day has finally come (and passed) and with mixed emotions I write the final Blog Post of the 2014-2015 year.  We've had an amazing year together and I feel so blessed that I had the opportunity to teach such an amazing group of young people.  It seems so unfair that 10 months flew by so quickly and we are already out of time!  I honestly couldn't have asked for a better group of students to work with each day. Students, its people like you, who make my job so much fun and I really do believe that I have the best job in the world!  We've shared so many wonderful experiences this year and I will always treasure these memories and the time we spent together.

Students, thank you again for being the amazing individuals you are.  Grade 8's I wish you nothing but the best in High School and I am confident each of you will be successful in whatever you do. Don't be shy next year and be sure to come back and visit.  Deshaye is your home and you are always welcome!  Grade 7's, I look forward to seeing you next year as the leaders of Deshaye and I have my fingers crossed that I get to teach each and every one of you again!

Parents, I would also like to thank you for all your support this year as well as the wonderful job you've done in raising your sons and daughters.  I know my year wouldn't have been as amazing without you either, so thank you very much!

Have an amazing summer,

Mr. B

What We Learned Today...June 22nd

ELA: We started out our day with our final Monday morning assembly of the year before heading back to class around 9:30.  Shortly after arriving back to our classroom, the students were briefed on their next movie assignment.  This new challenge tasked the students with selecting one of their favourite songs and using it to record their own lip sync video.  While the students only received a short amount of time this morning as well as some time at the end of the day, the results so far have been fantastic!! I am so impressed with how creative and humorous their videos are so far.  I can't wait to post the final products in Wednesday's blog posts so everyone will be able to see how talented our class is!

Grade 8 Math: Today officially marked the last Math class of the year for our Grade 8 students, and man did we ever go out in style! With our final unit completed last week, we briefly reviewed the Math Diagnostic results at the start of class before having a huge dance party for the remainder of class to celebrate!  Check out the videos below to watch some epic dance moves as well as listen to our final Karaoke Friday of the year!

ELA: This morning we started out the day with our year end STAR testing, which will show how much everyone's reading levels have grown this year!  Once we finished up the tests, students got into their groups and were given the rest of the period to began filming and editing their "Door Scene" video that they planned yesterday.  We continued working on this project after lunch and actually had some time to watch some finished videos!  Check out a few of them below:

Grade 8 Assembly: During the last hour of the day we headed to the gym for a very special Grade 8 Assembly.  Over the hour we viewed the photo-recreation and slide show from the Farewell on Wednesday and Grade 8 students were also given Fun Awards from their teachers.  To end the assembly, our music group performed an amazing rendition of the hit song "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa.  Below you can view the video of their amazing performance!

We will be going to a movie on Tuesday, June 23rd at the Rainbow Cinemas in the afternoon.  To help cover the cost we are asking students to bring $4.  Please hand money in to Mr. Bresciani on Monday!

French ready to negotiate!

Math: We started out our morning the same as yesterday by working on the Math Diagnostic Exams.  Over this period, the Grade 7's headed to Ms. Zenuk's room to finish up their exam while the Grade 8's remained behind to continue working on theirs.  (Instead of Religion after lunch, we had an extra Math class to give the students more time to work on their exams)

Genius Hour: Today was the last Genius Hour work period of the year and students worked incredibly hard putting the finishing touches on their projects.  We will be having our Genius Hour Expo on Monday and students will be sharing what they learned with the rest of the class.

Social Studies: During the last hour of the day we finally had our official Treaty Negotiations between the French Colonizers and the Plains Tribe as well as the British Colonizers and the Algonquian Tribe.  The groups did amazing job with the negotiations today! It was so exciting to listen in on their negotiations and hear all of the creative demands each side had and the counter-offers that were made in order to come to an agreement.  I can't wait until Monday when the groups will complete the second round of their negotiations and read the Treaties that both groups agreed upon.

What We Learned Today...June 3rd

Grade 8 Math: This morning we started out our day with an extra math switch instead of our usual ELA class.  With this extra time, we spent the hour reviewing the key concepts from each unit that we've learned this year.  The students were also given a little bit of time to create a formula sheet that they could bring into the exam with them.

Fully Alive: At the end of yesterdays class students were invited to write down any questions they had about the content we have been learning over the past month. Today I spent the entire period reviewing and answering any of the questions the students had before we move on to the next concept.

Grade 8 Math: After lunch we officially started writing our year end Math Diagnostic Exam.  We will continue writing this exam over the next two classes as it is quite a long exam.

Science: Today we were very fortunate to have a representative from the EYES camp lead us in a special activity involving spaghetti and eggs.  The students were given twenty minutes to construct a device that would protect an egg from cracking when another force was applied.  Check out the video above to see the results of one experiment!

Social Studies: During the last hour of the day students got into their Colonization Simulation groups and spent the period working on their minimum and maximum demands for our treaty negotiations tomorrow.

What We Learned Today...June 1st

The results of the Buffalo hunt!

Social Studies: Instead of our usual ELA class, we had an extra Social Studies period to make up for the one we missed last week.  Over the hour students got into their Colonization Simulation groups and began thinking of demands they have for key areas when we negotiate our Treaties on Wednesday.  It was so fun to watch how creative each group was with this activity and I can't wait to see the actual negotiations later this week!

Fully Alive: After lunch we continued through our unit by learning about Romantic and Sexual Fantasies as well as the damaging affect Pornography can have on an individual.  I have to say I am quite impressed with how mature our class has been while we have been discussing such serious topics.
Below is a copy of the Power Point I have using to teach this content:

Grade 8 Math: We spent the period learning about key points from Unit 11 which revolves around Statistics and Probability as well as reviewing some key concepts for their Math Diagnostic.  We will begin writing the Diagnostic Exam on Wednesday afternoon and we will continue writing until early the following week.
