What We Learned Today...October 31st

The Bresciani Bunch showing off their costumes!

ELA: To start the period the students were given a half hour to silently read their AR books before starting a special Halloween activity.  In the spirit (no pun intended) of Halloween, the students were treated to the annual Bresciani scary story.  This year the students got quite the scare but they can't be mad.  They have to "hand" it to me, it was a pretty scary story!

Phys. Ed: Mr. Fuchs took the students to the gym and they did a quick warm up and then had free choice for what activity to do.

Assembly: After lunch we headed to the gym for the yearly school costume parade where students and staff have the opportunity to show off their amazing costumes.

French: Instead of their quiz today, Ms. Bachiu showed some mercy by postponing the quiz and playing French Bingo over the period.

Dance: During the last hour of the day the senior students headed to the gym for the Halloween dance.  The entire school was treated to a surprise flash mob by the Bresciani Bunch to the song "Thriller".  With only a few brain breaks to practice, the students really impressed me with how amazing they did.  Well done everyone!

What We Learned Today...October 30th

Here's a quick overview of our day today!

ELA: We started the day out with a shortened ELA period and read the rest of Chapter 10 from Harry Potter together.

Religion: We were very fortunate to have the "Catholic Education Guru", better know as Mr. Meyers visit our classroom again for one of his awesome presentations.  Today he taught us about the history of Halloween and where many of the traditions originated from as well as the history behind All Souls and All Saints Day.   It's always a treat to have Mr. Meyers stop by our classroom and teach us something new about our faith! We hope he comes back and visits soon!

Phys. Ed: The students participated in circuit training and had time near the end for a mini Volleyball game.

Health: We spent the period finishing the video we started yesterday about Anorexia then the students completed a few response questions aligned with the video.  I have posted the video below if you would like to view it as well!

Grade 8 Math: Over the hour, the students worked hard on completing their textbook assignments from yesterday and began working on the 3.5 handout.

Assembly: Instead of Social today we headed to the gym for our Month End Assembly. Congratulations to all our Football team members who were recognized in front of the school today!

Working on the House Sorting Activity

Here's snapshot of our day here today:

ELA: We finally got back to our Harry Potter Unit and continued to look at the Sorting Ceremony and how characters are grouped in the book. Students then had the opportunity to sort their partners into Hogwarts houses using their knowledge of the traits for each house.

Arts. Ed: Ms. Postma spent the period with the students finishing up their Autumn sketches before comparing and contrasting another two paintings.

Health: We continued the presentation from last class and learned about eating disorders such as: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia and Binge Eating disorder. After the presentation the students watched a Ted Talk about eating disorders called, "Eating Disorders from the Inside Out" and worked on a couple response questions.

Grade 8 Math: For the first half of class, we went through the quizzes that the student's wrote yesterday before beginning the final textbook assignment for Unit 3. (For assignment details, see homework below)

Social Studies: Before we get back into our regular Resource and Wealth Unit, today we looked at an article that detailed some of the conflicts that are occurring in our world now. After reading, students were tasked with answering a few response questions on the article. It was a nice follow up to the article we read in September on the Gaza Strip.

Taking a second to pose while working on their Science!

After writing my posts the same for the past two year's, I'm going to try something a little different for today's post. Instead of the traditional paragraph, I've decided to give this a shot instead!

Today was a great day here at Deshaye and here's a breakdown of what we did over the course of the day:

ELA: Instead of working through our Harry Potter unit, we took a break today and finished up our AR movie party that we started on Friday by watching the end of the movie, "Divergent". Tomorrow we will get back to our Unit by looking a little more at the House Sorting Ceremony.

Phys. Ed: Unfortunately, due to Pre-K family day, the gym was unavailable so the students stayed back in the class with Mr. Fuchs and played a really cool game with beach volleyballs.

Arts. Ed: While currently working through their drama unit with Ms. Postma, the students continued to perform tableau's based on the villagers statues they looked at last class.

Grade 8 Math: The day finally came to write their Unit Three Quizzes and the students spent the majority of the period working through this.  If students finished up early they had the choice to work on their homework or get some extra math practice on IXL.

Science:  The students had the entire period today to finish up their Anonymous Fish Dissection Lab Report.  We no longer be spending any class time on these assignments and they will be due on Thursday.

Working on their dance this afternoon

We kicked off our week today with a brief school wide assembly in in the gym before heading back to the classroom for ELA.  In ELA we spent some time going over the Diagon Alley assignments before reading Chapter Nine together.  At 10:35 Ms. Postma stopped by for Arts. Ed and the students continued to look at critiquing through and activity that tasked them with comparing and contrasting two photographs by Vincent van Gogh and Robert Jones.  Once the students arrived back in the classroom we had Health and continued to work through our Body Image unit by learning about different Eating Disorders.

After lunch we spent the half hour normally reserved for Religion, to learn a special dance that we will be performing later this week.  In Grade 8 Math we briefly reviewed what we have learned so far in unit three before starting the 3.4 assignment.  *Grade 8's don't forget you have a quiz tomorrow, so be sure to study tonight. During the last hour of the day the students had French with Ms. Bachiu and they had a practice test and went over the key vocabulary words.

Working on the safety scavenger hunt!

Today we started out our day quite similarly to yesterday as we headed down to the Kindergarten to meet up with our little buddies.  Instead of reading, our class worked with the kindergartners on their safety scavenger hunt around the school.  Once again I was really proud of how great of a job our class did with their little buddies.  Great job everyone!  At 10:35 Mr. Fuchs took the students to the gym for Phys. Ed and they worked on a few volleyball skills before playing a mini game.

After lunch we spent some time working on a special project  that we will be presenting next week before Ms. Bachiu stopped by for French.  Over the French period the students worked on their office drawings and began to work on their staff room assignment.  During the last hour of the day we celebrated achieving our class goal of 10 AR points per student this month by having an AR movie party.

Reading with our little buddies!
This morning we started out the day with a quick AR period before heading down to the Kindergarten room to meet our little buddies.  Each grade 8 student was paired up with a Kindergarten student and spent the hour reading some of their buddies favourite books.  I was incredibly impressed with how amazing each student in our class was with their buddy.  They were very patient, kind and caring with their buddy and demonstrated to me, and the entire school, the wonderful leadership qualities they possess.  At 10:35 Mr. Fuchs took the students down to the gym for Phys. Ed and they continued to work on skills and movement patterns associated with Volleyball. In Health we continued to learn about Body Image and Photoshopping and the students worked on a small assignment near the end of class.

After lunch we had another early Math class so the Grade 8's had the full hour to complete their CAT tests.  Today the students worked through the Computation/Estimation portion of the exams and have officially finish all Division/Government assessments for the fall.  (Yes, you did read that correctly! We are finally done!!!....until the spring)  During the last hour of the day we headed back down to the Kindergarten room to meet our afternoon little buddies and the Grade 7/8's once again did a wonderful job reading with their buddies.

One of the Bresciani Bunch sharing his talent with us!

We kicked off our day today with AR from 9:00 - 9:30 and we officially hit our goal of 10 points per student! This means that we will be having an AR movie party this Friday afternoon.  In ELA we spent some time reviewing Chapter 7 by looking at the house sorting ceremony and at each of the Hogwarts Houses themselves.  We examined the traits for each house and practiced for tomorrows assignment by placing different singers into Hogwarts houses using the traits.  At 10:35 Ms Postma stopped by for Arts.  Ed and the students learned about tableau's and even got a chance to perform a few!

After lunch we switched early for Math again so the Grade 8's had the full hour to work on their CAT tests.  Today the students worked on the "reading" section of the test and we will finish up tomorrow with "Computation/Estimation".  During the last hour of the day we had Science and students were given the hour to work on their Fish Dissection Lab Reports.  I will give the students one more period to work on this assignment due to technology issues we had with the Surface Pro's yesterday.

What We Learned Today...October 21st

Today we started out our day with ELA and the students continued where they left off yesterday by working on their their guiding questions for Chapters 7+8.  However, today's assignment looked a little different than past ones as students will now have to self-assess their work before they can hand it in. We will be doing this through a checklist that lists all the important aspects they need to have in order to be successful.  I believe this will be extremely beneficial for students and will help them to attain higher marks on future assignments.  If you would like to see a copy of the checklist click here or check the ELA tab at the top. In Phys. Ed the students headed to the gym with Mr. Fuchs and the students were marked on their circuit training. Shortly after arriving back Ms. Postma stopped by for Arts. Ed and the students were working on their debate skills.

After lunch we had an early Math switch so the Grade 8's could have a full sixty minutes to write the Mathematics portion of their CAT tests.  We will be continuing this exam tomorrow and the students will be working their way through the Reading and Estimation sections.  During the last hour of the the day we had Science and the students had the hour to work on their Fish Dissection Lab Reports.  I will only be giving one more class period to work on this assignment so if it is not completed by Friday it will most likely be homework.

The Bresciani Bunch with John Chick!!

This morning we started out the day with a quick school wide assembly in the gym before heading back to class.  In ELA we finally got back to our Harry Potter novel and read through chapters 7 + 8 together over the hour.  At 10:35 Ms. Postma stopped by and took the students to the Arts. Ed room where they finished up their Guild assignments from last week.

After lunch the students had a brief AR period due to an early Math switch so the Grade 8's could have a little extra time starting their CAT tests. The Grade 8's spent the next hour working through the "Writing Conventions" portion of their CAT tests and tomorrow we will be starting the Mathematics section of the exam.  During the last hour of the day we headed to the gym where we were very fortunate to listen to a special presentation about safety by none other than star Saskatchewan Roughrider Defensive End, John Chick.  John did an amazing job and I know I speak on behalf of our entire class when I say thank you very much for taking the time to come and visit us today!

Dissection Time!

What a great day we had today! This morning as soon as everyone arrived in our classroom we started our anonymous fish dissection. Our dissection was a little different than past dissections at Deshaye because the students were not informed what type of fish they were dissecting.  Instead, students will be responsible for figuring this out afterwards using previous knowledge, inferences they draw from the dissection as well as research.  As you will notice from the pictures below, the students had the opportunity to dissect the head, the tongue, the eyes, the stomach, sex organs and the fins.  I was very impressed not only how great of a job everyone did today but also how well they were able to draw conclusions about their specimen based off what they saw and touched.  Well done everyone!

After lunch we had Religion and the students continued to research their Human Rights Activist for their presentation.  In Grade 8 Math we started 3.4 which looks at applying the Pythagorean Relationship to solve problems for the missing Leg or Hypotemoose Hypotenuse.  During the last hour of the day we had an extra Science class and the students began to work on their Lab Report for the dissection. This lab report will focus on each part of the fish that was dissected and the students will need to write about what they saw and what they felt as they dissected as well as a drawing for each part.

Here's some more pictures from today:

What We Learned Today...October 15th

Today we started out the day with AR from 9:00 - 9:30 before switching gears and working on the Diagon Alley assignment in ELA.  As we near the end of this assignment, I have to say I'm really impressed with the amount of detail and creativity our class has put shown.  They look absolutely amazing so far and I can't wait to see the final product! At 10:35 Ms. Postma took the students to the Arts. Ed room and they spent the period having their first "Town Hall" meeting for their guild assignments.  In Health we continued to look at Body Image and learned about the three different body types as well as different image issues that both Males and Females face.

After lunch we quickly took attendance before heading to Christ the King for our Thanksgiving Mass.  A huge thank you goes out to Ms. Kalynchuk and Ms. Goulet-Brown and their classrooms for doing such an amazing job planning and participating in today's wonderful Mass.  Once we arrived back at the school we had just enough time for a mini Science class where we went over some key safety instructions and directions for tomorrow's dissection.

Listening attentively to Mr. Meyers!

Today we started out our day with an AR period from from 9:00 to 9:30 and we getting close to our goal of 10 per student.  With 6.8 Points so far, we only need 3.2 more to go before October 20th!  Once we finished up our AR period, we were very fortunate to have a very special visitor this morning as Mr. Meyers joined us for a guest presentation.  Mr. Meyers is the Coordinator of Catholic Education for Regina Catholic Schools and he gave an amazing presentation that taught more about who we are as individuals and how there is truly no one else like us in the world. It was a great hour and we hope to have Mr. Meyers stop by again soon!

At 11:15 we switched gears and I finally unveiled the amazing project that we will be doing in our classroom over the next couple of months....Genius Hour!  This is a project I am extremely excited about as it allows the students to explore their own passions and it encourages creativity in the classroom. I will be sending some more information on this home next week and the students have been tasked with coming up with their question for the project by Tuesday.

After lunch we had ELA and the students were given the period to continue to work on their Diagon Alley assignments before switching for Math.   In Grade 8 Math the students who were unable to watch the 3.3 video last night, checked it out for the first 15 minutes of class while the others began to work on their textbook assignment.  During the last hour of the day we headed to the gym for another one of our epic AR assembly's where the students learned where exactly "Reading Can Take You".

Working on their Diagon Alley Assignments.

This morning we started out our day with ELA and the students continued to work on their Diagon Alley advertisements for the period.  We will continue to work on these assignments tomorrow and depending on how far the students get, we will decide on a deadline.  In Phys. Ed the students continued to learn the sport of Tchoukball and different drills associated with it.  At 11:15 the students were given the period for AR because we skipped it this morning.

After lunch we had Religion and the students continued to research a Human Rights Activist for their presentation.  At 1:10 Ms. Bachiu stopped by for French and the students continued to work on their Physical Activity assignments and played a fun basketball game. During the last hour of the day we headed outside for the Staff vs. Student Football Game.  The students put forth a valiant effort but unfortunately couldn't come away with the victory over a very talented staff football team.  Maybe next year guys!

Math class posing for our website!

Today, (much to the delight of the students) we started our day out by beginning the second session of the Expository and Persuasive Writing Assessments.  Over the hour, students began to use their research from yesterday to plan and write the first draft of their essays.  With today now over, that only leaves one more day for this assessment, which will be the editing and final draft day.  At 10:35 the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they participated in some circuit training. In Arts. Ed  Ms. Postma stopped by and they continued to look at critiquing art.

After lunch we had a half hour of AR (silent reading) because due to the writing assessment the students have missed out on most of their reading time this week.  In Grade 8 Math we briefly discussed the video from last night before students began working on their Pythagorean Relationship assignment from Pg. 91.  During the last hour of the day we spent some time shuffling in the new desks and tables for our classroom.
