What We Learned Today...October 30th

This morning we began the day with our usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  In ELA we continued looking at heroes in Greek Mythology by learning about the myth of Jason and the Argonauts.  This myth was great for us to look at today because there are numerous parts in Jason's myth that were depicted in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters as well.  The students were also given a writing assignment that tasks them with comparing the myths of Perseus and Jason to the journey of Percy Jackson in the movie Sea of Monsters.  This will be the major writing assignment for our Greek Mythology unit and we will continue working on it tomorrow and for most of next week.  *The assignment and rubric can be found on the ELA tab at the top of the blog.

In Grade 8 Math students learned how to find the unknown length of the Hypotenuse and the Legs of a Right Triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem.  We will continue to work on this concept on Monday after our Math Quiz.  *Remember to do a little bit of studying each night this week to help prepare you for the quiz.

After lunch we had Science and we continued to learn about Photosynthesis and also began to look at Cellular Respiration.  *Due to all of the tests and quizzes next week, we will have our Ecosystem quiz on Tuesday, November 12.  During the last hour of the day we headed down to the gym for our Month End Assembly.  A shout out goes out to all of the boys and girls football players for being recognized in front of the whole school this afternoon.

*Cookie Dough fundraiser packages went home with the students today.  All orders must be turned in no later than November 12th.

What We Learned Today...October 29th

This morning we started out the day with Accelerated Reading from 9:08 to 9:38 before beginning ELA.  During the next hour we continued our lesson from yesterday about heroes and read a story as well as watched a short cartoon about the adventures of Perseus. It was very important for the students to learn about Perseus today as the movie we saw in the afternoon (Percy Jackson) was based off of his story. In Grade 8 Math students were given an outline for their quiz on Monday, November 4th and then had the rest of the period to work on their review.

At 12:30 we headed over to the Golden Mile for the afternoon to watch the movie Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  As I mentioned earlier, this movie was a great opportunity for us because it ties in directly with our Greek Mythology Unit and more specifically with our lesson this morning.  The students will be working on an assignment tomorrow that will task them with comparing the story of Perseus in movie to Perseus the myths.

The boys doing their "No Homework Dance"

This morning we kicked off our week with a school wide assembly in the gym before heading back to the classroom for AR.  We are now officially up to 5.5 AR Points Per Student!  With 2 weeks left to go, I'm certain we'll make our goal as long as everyone continues to do their part and read.  In ELA we continued our Greek Mythology Unit by looking at what exactly a hero is and the different traits that are typically associated with Heroes.  We will continue to explore this topic tomorrow as we will be learning about the story of Perseus and Andromeda

In Grade 8 Math the students began to work on their new assignment, "Estimating Square Roots".  This assignment will be due on Wednesday, October 30th. There will also be a mid-unit quiz on Monday, November 4th so make sure you begin studying soon!
Just in case you're having trouble with your homework, I've post a video below that explains how to Estimate Square Roots:

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they began to paint the canvas of their Twin Portrait Assignment.   At 1:38 we headed down to Ms. Sutherland's room to meet with our afternoon Little Buddies.  We spent the rest of the period reading with our buddies and once again the students did an excellent job today! During the last hour of the day the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they worked on volleyball skills.

Reading with our Little Buddies!
Well I think it's safe to say this week as well as the whole year seems to be flying by. We're now officially twenty percent through the school which is pretty crazy when you think about it!

This morning we began our day with the usual AR period before heading down to Ms. Sutherland's classroom to meet up with our little buddies.  We spent the better part of the hour reading with our little buddies which was an excellent way to finish off education week.  I have to say once again how impressed I am with the students in our Grade 7/8 class.  They did such a wonderful job today reading with their little buddies as they truly demonstrated Christ like qualities through their kindness, caring and especially patience.  Well done Grade 7/8's!

In Grade 8 Math we quickly reviewed the Pythagorean Relationship before moving on to to the next concept in our unit, "Estimating Square Roots".  We spent the rest of the period working on this concept and will continue working on it on Monday.  If you were having trouble with today's concept just check out the video I embedded below. It also goes over the steps to Estimating Square Roots as well as Square Numbers:

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they worked through some more circuit training.  At 1:23 we had Science and spent a little bit of time discussing the Predator/Prey game that we played on Wednesday and the importance of balance in an Ecosystem.  We also spent some time looking at Photosynthesis and why it is important for all living things.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and spent some time investigating the question, "What is Violence".
*A note was sent home about our field trip next week to the Rainbow Cinema's to watch Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.  This movie aligns perfectly with our Greek Mythology Unit as we will be studying Heroes and Demigods next week.

We had our mini Film Festival this afternoon!
This morning we started out our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  After two weeks we are now up to 5 AR points per student which is well on the way to our goal of 10 Points.  Keep up the good work everyone!  To switch things up a little today, Mr. Csada stopped by at 9:38 and taught an extra Social Studies lesson because the students were going to miss the class at the end of the day due to the film festival. At 10:53 we spent some time viewing each of the fairytale trailers that the students made this week.  I was really impressed with how well the students did with these trailers considering they were only given an hour to complete them.  The students also voted on which two trailers would move on to our formal film festival in the afternoon.  Congratulations  to the groups who created "The 3 Little Pigs" and the "Wizard of Oz" for being voted into the festival!

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they learned about all about Michelangelo and his unique style of painting.  In French we began our Conversation Projects and each group took turns presenting their conversations for the rest of the class.  During the last hour of the day we headed to the gym for the first ever Deshaye Film Festival and cheered on the groups from our class!  Everyone is invited back to the school tonight at 6:30 for the night viewing of our Film Festival.

Playing the Predator/Prey game during Science

We had a shortened AR period this morning because we had a very special visitor stop by our class again. The "Catholic Education Guru", better known as Mr. Meyers stopped by this morning and talked to us about Christians views on the afterlife and compared them to Greek mythology.  Mr. Meyers also spent some time talking about Saints and the students got the opportunity to play some Saints BINGO. It's always a treat to have Mr. Meyers stop by our classroom and teach us something new about our faith! We hope he comes back and visits soon!
In Grade 8 Math students were given the first half hour of class to complete their CAT 4 tests. During the second half of class we reviewed sections 3.1 and 3.2 so the concepts are fresh when we begin 3.3 on Friday.

After lunch we had Science and students worked on their Paper Airplane Labs from last week.  I will be submitting these labs to Guinness Book of World Records tomorrow so our school will officially be a part of a record breaking attempt!  At 1:38 we headed outside for continuation of our Science class and the students participated in a Predator/Prey tag game that taught the students about the importance of having a balance in an ecosystem.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and were given their student ID's for the Pearson Portal which allows the students to access the textbook online or on their personal devices.  Mr. Csada also mentioned that there will be a Social Studies quiz next week on Wednesday, October 30th.

Our attempt at the world record!

We had a record setting morning here at Deshaye this morning as our Grade 7/8's gathered together in the gym and attempted to set a world record.  The students joined thousands of Canadians at hundreds of locations across the country in setting a Guinness World Record for the Largest Science Lesson. For the lesson students learned about the difference in gravity and atmosphere on Earth, Mars and the Moon through flying paper air planes.  The students did an excellent job with this lesson today and hopefully we will find out if they broke the record within the next two weeks.  If you would like to learn more about our record setting attempt you can visit the Government of Canada Science website.

Here's a video introducing our lesson today by Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield:

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed in the classroom and they learned about the Skeletal System.  At 1:30 we headed to the gym to support our little buddies in Kindergarten during their liturgy.  Ms.Sutherland and her class did a wonderful job today and I know our big buddies are very proud of their little buddies!  During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and they watched their Passive, Aggressive and Assertive scenario videos.

What We Learned Today...October 15th

This morning we started out our week with a wonderful Thanksgiving liturgy in the gym.  A special thanks to Mrs. Goulet-Brown's class as well as  Mrs. Folk for all their hard work in putting the liturgy together.  Once the liturgy was over we headed back to class for a shortened ELA period.  During this time students were given back their Pandora's Box Projects and we discussed the importance of following rubrics when completing an assignment.  This discussion was very important because there were numerous students who did not follow the rubric and as a result received a less than desirable mark.  However, because this was our first big assignment I am going to use it as a teaching tool for future assignments. Students will be allowed to re-submit improved projects to me by Thursday for remarking as long as they get a parent signature on their original rubric.  *Students must have proof that they have shown their parents their original mark before I will accept improved assignments.

Instead of Grade 8 Math today the students began to write their CAT 4 tests.  These tests are comprised of four areas that students will be tested on: Reading, Writing Conventions, Mathematics and Computation and Estimation.  We will continue writing these tests for the next two classes and should be finished by Friday.

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they participated in some circuit training as well as a game of tchoukball.  At 1:23 we had Science and had a brief discussion about Predators and Prey before learning the rules to a game we will be playing during our next class.  For the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and they worked on questions from Pg. 161 (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7) from their booklet.

Twin Portrait!

This morning we had Accelerated Reading for the first half hour of the day before moving on to a catch-up homework period.  Students were given the hour to work on any outstanding work they had in any of their classes. During this hour some of our classmates were also given the chance to attend a special book reading in the Library with critically acclaimed author, Susin Nielsen. These students were chosen to go due to their high AR points total after the first month of the year.

Instead of French today, we had an extra Math period from 10:53 to 11:53. For this period students each logged on to thier IXL accounts using the school computers as well as their own technology and spent the hour working through extra math practice questions. This is such a handy resource and I really encourage students to use it at home as well as a supplement to our regular math program.

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they continued to work on their Twin Portrait assignment.  At 1:38 we had Religion and began to look at the Creation Story from Genesis 1-2 in the Bible.  We will continue to look at this story tomorrow and the students will begin working on a project about this story.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and they continued to film their Passive, Assertive and Aggresive senerios.

The final results of the "Grammar Games".

This morning we had out usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  In ELA we continued to play the "Grammar Games" and worked our way through the Sweet Sixteen all the way to final.  There were some pretty interesting storylines throughout the tournament, especially the Cinderella Story of Matt, who made it all the way to the Final Four before being knocked out by Grace.  In the end though, it was the other Matt who came out victorious over Diamond in a best of 3 series.  Congratulatoins Matt!

In Grade 8 Math we continued to work through our unit by learning about right triangles as well as the Pythagorean Theorem.  We will continue this lesson on Thursday before the students recieve their assignment for this concept.

After lunch we had French and began to learn about regular "er" verbs as well as the pattern for conjugating them.  At 1:38 we had Religion and read about the life of Mother Teresa, (The Patron Saint for Deshaye) and the students answered a few questions about the reading.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and continued to work on some questions about the rights of Canadians.

Playing the Consumer/Producer game.
This morning we started our day off with a school wide assembly in the gym.  Once we got back to the classroom we had AR from 9:08 to 9:38.  As of 3:30 today we were up to 10 AR Points Per Student, which was our goal for the month.  This means that we will be having a much deserved AR party later this week to celebrate our dedication to reading over the past month.  Keep up the great work everyone!

In ELA we took a small break from our Greek Mythology Unit to learn about the writing process.  During the lesson we discussed the importance of writing in our world and also brainstormed all the different jobs that involve writing. (Hint: almost all of them!)  After our discussion we played "The Grammar Games", a game which split the class up into a tournament bracket and had the students going head to head answering questions about the Writing Process.  We got through the preliminary round today and will go through the sweet sixteen and final four tomorrow.

Our "Grammar Games" Bracket!
In Grade 8 Math the students continued to work on their assignments from 3.1.  Some students also had the opportunity to work on some extra practice questions on IXL.  IXL is the same extra math practice website that we used last year.  Students each have their own ID's and Passwords and can access the website from both school and home.  I highly recommend this as an additional studying tool for exams as well as extra practice during units to help students grasp the various concepts we are learning about.
Mimio Vote.
After lunch the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they headed to the gym for some circuit training before going outside to work on some football skills.  At 1:23 we had Science and learned about three kinds of Consumers: Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores.  The students also participated in a Mimio vote activity that dealt with identifying different types of consumers and producers.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and they worked on their Green/Pink Experiment questions.

Today was the cut off day for our AR goal of 10 points.  However, first thing this morning the students begged me to give them the weekend to finish their books and because I'm such a nice person, I agreed.  After AR we headed to the gym for pictures, which took up the better part of an hour.

In Grade 8 Math we spent the first half of the period going through their Unit Two exams.  For the second half of the class the students continued to work on their assignments from Pg. 85 as well as their next assignment. *The assignment from Pg. 85 will be due on Monday, October 7th,

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they continued to work on their Portrait Twin Assignment.  At 1:38 we had French and the students wrote their listening quiz on the numbers 1-100.  Next week we will continue to look at some more basic conversational phrases and also begin learning about Regular "ER" verbs.  During the last hour of the day the students had Phys. Taking a picture for the Portrait Twin Assignment.

 * Due to technical difficulties, the blog post for October 1st didn't  publish.  I was able to publish it this morning so if you scroll down it should appear below.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

We started out our day today with the usual AR period from 9:08 - 9:38.  With only two days left, we are now up to 6.5 AR Points Per Student.  This means we only need 3.5 more points to earn the AR Movie Party next week, so keep up the good work! In ELA we spent the first fifteen minutes of class going over the "Gods of Olympus" assignment.  As we went through the assignment we began to talk about the Writing Process and we will continue to look at these important steps next week.  We spent the second half of class working on the Pandora's Box Project.  *Don't forget that this assignment is due on Monday, October 7th.

At 10:53 we had French and we played a game of Jeopardy that dealt with the numbers 1-100, days/months and basic conversation questions to help review for their quiz.  This was the last French class before our quiz so remember to continue studying the Numbers 1-100 for Friday.
*The French quiz will be split up into two sections: 1) Listening to a number in French and writing it down (ex. What number is dix?) 2. Listening to a number in English and writing it in French. (ex. What is the number 40 in French?)

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they continued to work on their Twin Portrait Assignment.  As you can see from some of the pictures, some students began to take pictures of themselves as their portrait twin, which made for some excellent afternoon entertainment.  At 1:38 we had Religion and the students began to work on an inferencing assignment using the Coat of Arms they created last week.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and they began filming their Passive, Assertive and Aggressive Scenario's on the iPads.

What We Learned Today...October 1st

This morning we started our day out with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38. * We are now up to 6.5 AR Points Per Student, which means we only have 3.5 Points to go! If everyone continues to read, we will most definitely be having our AR party next week.

Instead of ELA this morning, we were very fortunate to have Mr. Meyers (who is the Catholic Education Services Coordinator for Regina Catholic Schools) stop by and teach us about how important we are in God's Eyes. Through numerous videos, a bingo game, and even a test..yes I said test, we learned a lot more about who we are as individuals and how there is truly no one else like us in the world. It was a great hour and we hope to have Mr. Meyers stop by again soon!

In Grade 8 Math we began our new unit on the Pythagorean Relationship by investigating Squares and Square Roots.  Some key concepts we learned today were: Perfect Squares, Non-Perfect Squares, Prime Numbers, Prime Factors and Prime Factorization.  We will continue this lesson next class on Thursday.

After lunch we had French and continued to focus on basic introductory questions and responses.  *We will have a listening quiz this Friday, October 4th on the numbers 1-100. The quiz will be split up into two sections: 1) Listening to a number in French and writing it down (ex. What number is dix?) 2. Listening to a number in English and writing it in French. (ex. What is the number 40 in French?)  At 1:23 we had Religion and the students continued to work on their Faith Formation Blog Posts.  Don't forget these posts are due for class tomorrow. If you forgot how to get to the blog just click here.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and continued their "Wrist Band Equality Social Experiment".
