What We Learned Today...September 28th

Today we kicked off the morning by starting into a new unit in Religion.  For the foreseeable future we will be focusing our Religion classes around the Big Question, "Do I Belong?".  We began to explore this through looking at the 7 Sacraments, with an emphasis on Baptism.  Instead of ELA this morning, we switched and had Social Studies because we missed our last Social class because of the Teachers Retreat.  We continued learning about Goods and Services in our own community through the use of Google Maps.  Students were asked to search their address on Google Maps and explore their community and document the local businesses they find.  They were then asked to identify the businesses as either a "Good" or "Service" and share their findings with the rest of the class.

After lunch we finished up our French Conversation Presentations, which really seem to highlight the amount of "Dramatic Flair" the members of our class possess.  (I think we have quite a few future actors here!).  For the last hour of the day, we had a very special month end assembly and handed out our Mother Teresa Awards for September.  (Each month the staff at Deshaye will select three students in every class that demonstrate some the characteristics of Mother Teresa)

This month the characteristic we focused on was Welcoming.

I would like to congratulate the winners from our class for the month of September:  Ian, Rafaela and Kevin!

What We Learned Today...September 27

After our AR time this morning, we finished up our Religion handout and learned about what "Christian Pentecost" is and the significance it has within our faith.  In ELA the students continued to work on their research paragraph about someone who has "stepped up" or "taken a stand" in history.  Once groups finish up their research, the groups will begin to script and rehearse their News Broadcasts.
In Grade 8 Math we continued to work on Pg. 85 in the textbook and used the hour to complete the assignment. (If you are unsure of which questions to do please see the "Math" page)  However, as Math concluded the class was treated to some very impressive lip syncing and dancing that would have made Leonardo DiCaprio proud!

During French, students began to present their short introductory French conversations to the class and man did we experience a wide range of conversations.  We had two people discussing how to get into a "bald club" (very interesting secret handshake...), a proposal, a bank robbery and even an impromptu gangnam style dance!  It was an interesting class to say the least...
For the last hour of the day we took part in the Terry Fox walk with the entire school.

After AR time this morning, we got right into the thick of our new ELA Broadcast studio assignment.  Students were broken up into groups of 6 and each group is responsible for researching someone who has "stepped up" or "taken a stand" throughout history.  Once each group has completed their research they will then create a News Broadcast that we will actually film at the Broadcast Studio at St. Peter.  During Grade 8 Math we briefly went over our Unit Tests from last week and began working on a square root assignment.

After Lunch the students continued to work on the graphing art assignment with Ms. Norris.  Instead of French today we continued to work on our ELA projects and will make up our French class on Friday.  For the last hour of the day the students learned another type of Football game and Ms. Norris took them outside to test it out.

What We Learned Today...September 25th

Today we started out with a very special school wide assembly in the gym.  Mrs. Steranko talked to us about our upcoming Terry Fox walk that we will take part in on Thursday.  She also showed us a really moving documentary about how Terry "stepped up" and made a difference in the world through his inspirational Marathon of Hope.  Once we got back to the classroom we viewed the documentary "Degrassi in India" as well as the "10X10 Movement" commercial.  Students were asked to respond to the prompts on their accompanying handout.

After Lunch we continued to work through some key definitions from our expectations handout.  For the last hour the students received their Broadcast Studio assignment handouts.  We discussed the purpose of the assignment as well as the individual research that each group member would have to do.  You can view the first half of the assignment online here.

What We Learned Today...September 21st

Today seemed to go by incredibly fast, which makes sense because the year also seems to be flying by.  (Can you believe we are almost 10% done the school year already?) During ELA today we continued to learn about Craig Keilburger and how he "stepped up" through creating the Free the Children movement at the age of 12.  We watched an interview with Craig and Mark Keilburger and responded to the prompts on the handout.  If you have lost a handout or would like to type your answers up on the computer, you can get a copy here.
In Math the Grade 8's moved on to Unit 3 and began to learn about Squares and Square roots, while the Grade 7's continued to review Coordinates and Design.

After Lunch students had the full half hour to finish up their introductory French conversations and rehearse for next class.  (Remember these converations are due next class, Wednesday, September 26th).  During the last hour we had a very special assembly to kick off AR for the year.  The students were treated to some special guests as well as some of the most magnificient, Academy Award winning acting in years.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and I will see you on Tuesday because there is NO SCHOOL on Monday!.  Enjoy the long weekend.

What We Learned Today...September 20th

Today we had Accelerated Reading for the first half hour of the day, during which some students began taking their AR tests and earing points.  We discussed how the school goal for AR this year was for all Grade 7/8s to reach at least 150 points! However since Mr. Bresciani and his class are very competitive, we are going to shoot for even higher!  After AR we continued a discussion on people who have "Stepped Up" with a specific focus on Craig Kielburger and the organizaiton and movement he started with "Free The Children".  We then took part in a viewing activity where students watched two short Youtube clips ("Free the Children Introduction" and "Free the Children Documentary") and were asked to respond to prompts on an accompyaning handout
During Math all 7/8 students took their STAR tests on the laptops in the Library with Mrs. Folk.

Graphics Assignment from today
After lunch we continued to work on our introductory conversations in French.  (Students will have one more class period to work on their conversation with their partners)  Unfortunately Mr. Csada was away today for Science, but they were elated to have Mr. Pringle back as their substitute teacher.  For the last hour of the day the students had Arts. What We Learned Today...September 19th

Like every other day, we started out our morning with a half hour of AR time.  Students are now also able to take AR tests because they finally have access to their student computer accounts.  During ELA, students spent their second class working through their beginning of the year RAD tests. (Yes I said beginning of the year! We will have an end of the year RAD as well in June...Is everyone excited??)
The Grade 8's had their first Unit Test today on Ratio's Rates and Proportions and we will begin our new unit on Square Roots and the Pythagorean Theorem in class tomorrow.

Some of the Football Routes taught.

After lunch, the students had Arts. Ed and Ms. Norris continued her lesson about art and drawing.  For French we started out the hour discussing what we as a class wanted out of French this year and how we can achieve some of the suggestions.  After our discussion we continued to work on our French conversations for the rest of the hour.  (Note: We will have next class to practice our conversations and we will be presenting the following class on Friday).  In Phys. Ed Ms. Norris taught the students about a few different kinds of Football routes and then went outside to practice them.

What We Learned Today...September 18th

Learning using the iPad
Unfortunately Mr. Bresciani was away for the morning at PLC meetings so the students had a Substitute teacher.  During the morning the students continued to work on the "Mars Rover" assignment for the first half of ELA.  For the second half, the students read the article "Welcome to the Global Village" and answered response questions on a handout.  To end the morning, the students had an awesome time being physically active for an hour in Phys. Ed.

After lunch we began to examine the definitions of some Biblical words that we will see in the Biblical Passage: Acts 2:1-15.  (We are examining this passage because of it's connection to expectations).  At 1:15 Mr. McCulloch stopped by to teach the students an interesting lesson in Health and Career Guidance.

Using an iPod to search google
During Recess, Mr. B got some exciting news....The students computer accounts were FINALLY READY! So rather than work on Math Computation today, we spent the hour learning about what Goods and Services are and where see them in our communities. They followed the directions on the Goods and Services handout in order uncover the answers and definitions using the various forms of technology employed.
This was a really exciting lesson because not only did we finally get on the laptops, but we were able to use the School iPads, iPods and Cell phones to extend our learning.  Students were also able to use their electronic devices to participate in a survey on Goods and Services and watch it update live on the SMART board at Poll Everywhere
Check out some more of the pictures below of our learning during the last hour of the day:

What We Learned Today...September 17

Today we started out the week with another great assembly in the gym first thing this morning.  After our assembly we had a quick 15 minutes of AR time before moving on to everyone's favourite part of their morning...RAD testing.  During ELA the grade 7 and 8's read through a different non-fiction passage (depending on what grade they are in) and then were asked to answer written questions about the literature in an accompanying handout. During Math the Grade 8's went over their quizzes from last week and spent the rest of the class reviewing and practicing for our Unit Test on Wednesday.

After lunch for Arts. Ed Ms. Norris continued teaching about art as well as how our brain works and perceives things.  In Science Mr. Csada continued from last and taught the students all about Optics and Vision.  Unfortunately during social we were unable to get on the Laptops so we had to postpone our technology integrated lesson until later in the week and instead learned all about the Mars Rover Curiousity landing.

What We Learned Today...September 11th

Safety First!
This morning we started the morning off by discussing the September 11th attacks and how it has impacted our lives today.  We watched part of the documentary "102 Minutes that Changed America" as well as read stories about the altruistic people who stepped up during the attacks.  (In particular we focused on the Firefighters as well as the passengers aboard United Flight 93).  Students were then asked to contemplate a series of questions about the attacks, altruism and the need for peace.  (Assignment can be found here).  After Recess we spent some time in the Gym working through some team building activities that included running across the gym with a piece of paper on your head as well as using mats to get an entire team of 6 across to the other side without touching the gym floor.

For a half hour after lunch, we had a brief work period to catch up on any outstanding work to avoid taking it home for homework.  (Because who likes Homework right?)  During the last hour of the day, we created "Wordles" using the responses from the 9/11 questions that we answered in Religion and ELA this morning.

Today we started off the morning with Religion and held an "I can't Funeral"  The students all wrote down things that they said they couldn't do and we collected them all together and held a funeral for them because the words "I can't" will no longer exist in Mr. Bresciani's class.  After Religion we spent the next hour in ELA working on our Personal Playlist Assignment. In Math, the Grade 8's learned about Proportions and how understanding Ratio's and Rates helps to solve Proportion problems. Students were assigned the 2.3 handout #s 1-7, 9, 11

After lunch we quickly reviewed the numbers 1-100 in French and then had a quick pop quiz.  In Social we discussed the "Crisis in Syria" and how it impacts us as citizens of Canada.  We also discussed the idea of standing up for what you believe in and what we thought inspired the teenagers in Syria to stand up and take a stand.

It's been a great first week of school and I'm a little disappointed it's the weekend already.  (Although the students may not feel the same way!)

The First Day of School

Our first day of school as a Grade 7/8 class at Deshaye went amazing and we got so much accomplished! We were able to learn about classroom and school procedures though an amazing Procedure Power Point Presentation that had the students begging for more procedures. (No? Well maybe it was just me!) In ELA we worked on an assignment focused on helping the teacher get to know the students better.  In between that we tackled two brain brain breaks and set a new class record for Silent Ball (57 seconds).
After Lunch we worked on a Time Capsule with all the students expectations for this upcoming year in Grade 7/8.  To cap the day off we took measurements of our height to see how much we will have grown by the end of the year.  It was a great day and I'm sure everyone has already forgot about the nice, relaxing summer! (What? It hasn't? Well don't worry, give it a week and school will be all you can think about!)
