What We Learned Today...May 31st


Working hard in our outdoor Math class.

ELA: This morning we finished up our On Demand Writing Assessments and students had some time to work on a special Farewell activity once they handed their essay in.

Genius Hour: With presentations beginning tomorrow, students were given one final period to go over and practice their final presentations.

Math: After reviewing the lesson from yesterday, the students had the remainder of the class to work on their 11.2 assignments.

What We Learned Today...May 30th

Working on their Genius Hour presentations!

 ELA: This morning we started out our day with the On Demand Writing Assessment as students began working on the good copies of their persuasive essays.

Fully Alive: We continued to work our way through the "Gift of Sexuality" unit by learning about fertility as well as STI's.

Genius Hour: Students were given the half hour period to put the finishing touches on their Genius Hour presentations.

Math: We started out the class by learning how to find the total outcomes for probability problems with numerous events. Once we finished up the lesson, students were given the rest of the period to work on the 11.2 assignment.

What We Learned Today...May 29th

The end of our "Wheel of Mis-Fortune"

ELA: This morning we started out our day with a quick assembly before the students started working on their On Demand Writing Assessment.

Science: Today we had a double Science period testing out the plasticine boats that the students designed last week.  The challenge was to create a boat that could hold the most pennies without sinking.  Our winning boat held a remarkable 214 pennies!

Math: Students put their new knowledge of probability to the test by participating in an hour long game of "Wheel of Mis-Fortune".  In this activity, students were tasked with identifying various probabilities for all the flavours in package of "Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans", and at one point, actually taste testing one of the jelly beans.

What We Learned Today...May 26th

Testing their boat design!

ELA:
This morning the students began their day with the On Demand Writing Assessment.  Over the course of the hour, the students researched their persuasive essay topic and recorded all important information.  On Monday they will begin working on the first draft of their essay.

Genius Hour: Since all the band students were away, the remaining students were given one final period to work on their Genius Hour presentations.

Religion: After lunch the students participated in a mediation about personal happiness as well as the happiness of others.

Math: Students were given the entire period to work on their 11.1 handouts.

Science: During the last hour of the day the students were split up into groups and were tasked with using their knowledge of buoyancy as well as density, to design a boat out of plasticine.

What We Learned Today...May 18th


Sunset Rehearsal/Genius Hour: We started out the morning with our usual AR period before students practiced their songs for this afternoon or worked on their Genius Hour project.

Fully Alive: Today we learned a lot about a range of topics including: Dating, Sexual Pressures (external and internal) as well as Sexual Abuse.

Deshaye's Got Talent: After lunch we headed over to the Sunset Extendi-care and the students performed various songs and spent time with the residents there.  The students did an amazing job and I couldn't be more proud of them!

What We Learned Today...May 16th

Learning about forces through Tug  of War!

Extended Genius Hour: We started the day out with our usual AR period before switching gears to Genius Hour.  As a result of writing the RAD test the past few classes I promised the students a few extra hours to work on their Genius Hour presentations which they will have over the next few days.

Sunset Talent Show Prep:  Since we will be visiting the Sunset Retirement home later this week, students were given some time to practice the talents that they will be performing.  

Math:  Students were given the entire period to work on the 10.4 handout.

Science:  After solving a few questions on Density, we learned about forces and the difference between Gravitational Forces and Buoyant Forces

What We Learned Today...May 15th


ELA: This morning we started out our day with a quick assembly in the gym before finishing up the RAD tests the students began last week.

Genius Hour: Students were given the entire period work on their final products and presentations as they are due on June 1st.

Fully Alive: After lunch we took some time to go through many of the questions the students had from our lesson on Friday.

Math: We began the class with a mini lesson on 10.4 before students began working on the assignment.

What We Learned Today...May 12th

ELA: This morning we started out our day by continuing the RAD tests that the students began yesterday.

Genius Hour: With the band students away, the remainder of the class worked on their Genius Hour projects as well as any other homework they had.

Fully Alive: We continued our lesson on Growth and Change and discussed many important issues surrounding sexuality such as: Romantic Fantasies, Sexual Fantasies, Pornography, and Homosexuality.  Feel free to view the power point from yesterday as it includes all the information we covered today.  (Note: all subject matter in the power points are taken from the Fully Alive Grade 8 Textbook)

What We Learned Today...May 11th

Math: This morning we followed the same structure as yesterday and moved our Math period to the morning and continued working on the 10.3 assignment.

Fully Alive: We picked up where we left off yesterday and learned about stresses that young adults face as well as different methods for managing it.  I've posted the whole presentation below for anyone who would like to follow along with this unit.


 


ELA:  With all our reviewing complete, we dedicated the hour and a half period after lunch to writing the RAD exams. While students expressed their displeasure with writing these assessments again, I assured them that no matter how little they enjoy writing these tests, I enjoy marking 29 of them even less...

What We Learned Today...May 10th

 
Finding the density!

Math: This morning we switched things up a bit today and started out the day with Math so the students could finish up their 10.2 assignments from yesterday.

Fully Alive: We continued through Unit 3 by learning about some of the stresses that young adults face as their bodies are changing.

PAA: After lunch the students were given the period to complete their final reflection for the PAA activities they participated in this week.

Science: We briefly reviewed the concept of "Density" from yesterdays lesson before investigating how to find the density of an object using displacement.

What We Learned Today...May 9th

ELA: This morning we started out our day by working our way through the remainder of the practice RAD.

PAA Day: The students headed to their PAA stations and finished up the activities that they began yesterday.

Religion: After lunch we learned how to write quality comments on blog posts using the three C's and one Q: Compliment, Comment, Connect and Question.  Students were then tasked with writing a comment on one of their peers blog posts.

Math: Students were given the entire period to work on their 10.2 handouts.

Science: During the last hour of the day we learned about Density as well as how temperature affects viscosity.

Practicing solder bridges!

ELA: This morning we started the day out with the practice RAD from last week.  We spent the period focusing on the inferencing and connection sections and will finish up with the comprehension strategies tomorrow.

PAA Day: Students were split up into different groups and had the opportunity to take part in a different PAA (Practical and Applied Arts) activity.

Fully Alive: After lunch the students were given the entire period to write their Reproductive Systems quiz.

Math: We briefly reviewed the 10.2 lesson before students began working on the 10.2 handout.

ELA: This morning we started out the day with more Harris Burdick stories in "authors corner".

Fully Alive: We continued our unit on the Gift of Sexuality by reviewing the male and female reproductive systems before beginning our lesson on Intimacy.

Religion: After lunch the students got into their groups and continued working on the Stations of the Resurrection assignment.  These assignments are due tomorrow and will need to be completed as homework if they are not done.

Math: We started the period off with a brief review of the 10.1 lesson before the students began working on their first assignment for our new unit.

Sharing her Creative Writing Story!

ELA: This morning we started our day out with another round of "authors corner" as students continued to read their Harris Burdick stories out loud to the class.

Science: We put our new knowledge of viscosity to the test as students explored the "bubble lab" to discover which fluids have the highest viscosity.

Math: Students were given the entire period to work on their Unit 9 Exams.

Religion: At the end of the day, students got into their groups and continued working on their Stations of the Resurrection assignments.

ELA: With all our creative writing stories completed, we had an "Authors Corner" and the students took turns reading their stories in front of the class.

PAA Day: The students headed to their PAA stations and finished up the activities that they began yesterday.

Religion: After lunch the students got into their groups and continued working on their Stations of the Resurrection assignment.

Math: Since we have a short exam tomorrow, students were given the entire period to work on the Practice Test and Unit Review from their textbooks.

Science: During the last hour of the day we learned about viscosity through a short demo on the "ramp method" and introduced our Bubble Lab for tomorrow.
