What We Learned Today...November 27th

One of the Wordles from today!
This morning we started out our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38. In ELA we finished up all the "Youtube Hero" presentations and began working on a Wordle assignment. For this task, the students had to use the hero paragraphs they wrote and turn it into a "Word Cloud" using the wordle website. Unfortunately we ran out of time before the students could complete their Word Cloud, so we will finish them up in class tomorrow. In Grade 8 Math we spent the first half of class reviewing last class as well as learning how to convert percents to decimals and fractions. The students were then given an assignment (4.2) to work on for the remainder of the period.

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they officially kicked off their unit on Music by investigating the different elements1:23 we had French and the were given the half hour period to complete their Voyager Annexe 2 assignments from Monday. During the last hour of the day the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they worked on bumping, setting and serving the volleyball.

What We Learned Today...November 26th

Report Card Day!

The day that every student looks forward to has finally come. No, it's not the last day of school.  It's Report Card Day!! What....you're not excited about it? Well maybe it's just me because it means they're finally done.  My Bad!!

We started off our morning with AR from 9:08 to 9:38 before moving on to ELA.  *Our class is now up to 4.3 AR points per student for the month of November.  If every student continues to do their part and read for at least 30 minutes per day, we'll reach our goal in no time.  In ELA, the students continued to present their "Youtube Hero" Assignments to the rest of the class.  Once we finished up with the presentations, the students each filled out an anonymous term one reflection about our classroom.  These reflections asked the students to write about what they've enjoyed so far this year, what they would change to help them learn better and what they would like to see more of next term.   I believe these relflections are incredibly important to help me grow in my teaching as well as our classroom environment moving forward.  Even though I'm a teacher, I'm still a learner too.  I continually learn how to do my job better each and every day and these reflections will help me to do just that!

In Grade 8 Math we continued to work on IXL because we were missing quite a few students who were at Full Band.  Tomorrow we will continue to work on converting Fractions, Decimals and Percents.  If you've forgot what we were working on last week, I've posted a little refresher below:

After lunch the students had a brief Phys. Ed class before heading to the gym for our Holodomor Liturgy.   Shortly after arriving back to our classroom we had Science and learned about two new types of Consumers: Scavengers and Decomposers.  We will be working on a lab tomorrow where the students will actually get the opportunity to grow a decomposer in a bag.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health and they continued to work on their Personality Profiles.

Note about Report Cards: I have attempted to pack them with as much detail as I could. Besides the report card you will also receive a spread-sheet of all of the assignments and tests that I gave to your daughter / son for every class that I taught to them.It is a useful method to start a discussion about what is working well and / or what improvements need to be under-taken in order to maximize their learning potential in each and every class. I will also be emailing these spreadsheets home as well on a bi-weekly basis.  Please send me an email at m.j.bresciani.rcsd.ca if you have not recieved a copy of them electronically. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss each student’s progress and to help ensure that the academic plan that we have for each and every student is the right one for them. Please remember too that if you cannot meet with me on the scheduled dates or if you feel that you need more time I am always willing to make myself available before or after school on any given day.

Showing their Rider Pride!
After an exhilerating Rider Grey Cup win last night, there were quite a few exhausted students (and staff members) walking through the doors this morning.  However, everyone still had more than enough energy left to cheer and sing "Green is the Colour" during our assembly when Ms. Norris talked about the big win last night! Rider Pride has been visible all throughout the playoffs here at Deshaye and this morning was no different! Great job everyone!

Once we got back from the assembly we headed to the Library for ELA because we were having a bit of construction done in our room this morning.  During this period the students took turns presenting their "Youtube Hero Assignments" to the rest of the class.  The presentations went great and we will continue the rest of presentations tomorrow.  At 10:38 the students were given the period to work on IXL Math or any other homework they may have had.

After lunch Ms. Postma stopped by for Arts. Ed and the students worked on a reflection for their Twin Portrait Assignment. Ms. Postma has informed me that this assignment will be due on Wednesday.  At 1:38 we had French and began to look at different geographical landmarks as well as questions and responses that are associated with them. During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and they worked on a personality quiz.

What We Learned Today....November 21st

Trying on some Grey Cup rings today courtesy of the Tillman's
We started out our morning with AR from 9:08 to 9:38 before heading to the gym for a special presentation.  We were very fortunate this morning to have former Saskatchewan Roughrider, Rob Bresciani come out to our school to talk with the students about the importance of hard work, never giving up and following your dreams.  He discussed his experiences growing up in Saskatchewan and the different obstacltes he had to overcome to ultimately make his dream of playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders come true.  It was an absolute pleasure to have him out today and I would like to thank him for stopping by on such short notice!

In Grade 8 Math the students spent the first half of class working on a reflection of their experiences in Math so far this year.  They were asked to focus on what they've found success with, what they need to improve and what they need to do to help them improve. During the second half of class we began to look at converting Fractions to Decimals and Percents as well as converting Decimals to Percents and Fractions.  We will continue to work on these concepts in Tuesday's class.

After lunch the students were given two more report card reflections to work on that tasked them with writing about their progress in ELA so far this year as well as a general refelction on the year so far.  We will be examing these documents further next week in Parent-Teacher Interviews.  At 1:23 we had Religion and the students were given the period to finish up their Saint Research Assignments. Don't forget that these assignments are due on Monday.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social with Mr. Csada and they began presenting their Social Issues to the class.

*Philippines Fundraiser Update:
Our unofficial total at the end of the day today has our school at the absolutely amazing total of $1850.  This is so incredible and I am so impressed with the generosity from everyone here at Deshaye.  Thank you so much to everyone who donated this week and a special thanks to our class for their excellent leadership and hard work in putting this fundraiser together.  Great work everyone!

What We Learned Today...November 20th

I hope I did a better job than this guy as Acting Adminstrator!

This morning I was Acting Administrator because Ms. Norris and Mr. Fuchs were away at meetings so the students were very fortunate to have Ms. Chabot as their sub this morning!  She informed me that they were excellent this morning and got a lot accomplished with her.

In the afternoon the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs right after lunch and they completed their circuit warm up and played a few different games.  At 1:23 we had Religion and the students were given the hour to work on their Saint Poster Assignments.  These assignments will now be homework as they are due on Monday and there will be no more class time to work on them.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and they worked on their Social Presentations.

* Remember to bring donations to school this week if you would like to support the Philippines and give one of our staff members a make over at the next assembly! After three days our fundraising totals for the Philippines is now up to $880.20! (WOW!!) With only one more day to go in our fundraiser, the top three spots are still up for grabs. What We Learned Today...November 19th

Mr. Meyer's visited us today!

This morning we started out our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  At 9:38 we were very fortunate to have Mr. Meyers stop by again for another one of his wonderful presentations.  Today, some of the topics he covered were: The history of St. Nicholas and Santa Claus, the origin of the Candy Cane as well as what exactly Advent means.  Once again he did such a great job today and I know I speak for everyone when I say we can't wait until he's back in December!

In Grade 8 Math we went through our unit three exams and as I said yesterday, I am very pleased with how well the students did on the tests.  After reviewing their exams they began working on their assignment from pg. 128 as well as handout 4.1.  Students will continue working on the 4.1 handout during tomorrow's class and we will move on to 4.2 on Thursday.

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they worked on their Twin Portrait Reflections.  At 1:23 we had ELA and the students were given the period to finish up their "Youtube Hero" assignment.  If students did not finish this assignment in class today, it will be homework as we will be presenting videos on Thursday morning.  During the last hour of the day the students had Phys. Ed and after a quick warm up they were able to vote on a game to play.

* Remember to bring donations to school this week if you would like to support the Philippines and give one of our staff members a make over at the next assembly!

After two days our fundraising totals for the Philippines is now up to $218.19!  With two more days in our fundraiser, the top three spots are still up for grabs.  Don't forget that the three classes that finish with the most money per student will each be able to select a staff member to dress up at our Month End Assembly!

What We Learned Today...November 18th

Our food web in Science today!

We kicked off our week by heading to the gym first thing this morning for the beginning of the week assembly.  During the assembly a few of our classmates spoke to the entire school about our "Teacher Makeover Fundraiser" this week and did a great jump pumping the rest of the school up.  Once we got back to the classroom the students had a brief AR period before starting ELA at 10:00.  In ELA students began to work on their "I Need a Hero Assignment" that tasked them with finding a video on Youtube that represents heroism.  Students then needed to document the different traits that the Hero possessed and explain in a paragraph why they believe this person deserves the title "Hero".  We will work on these assignments tomorrow morning and students will begin presenting their video to the rest of the class in the afternoon.

In Grade 8 Math the students wrote their Unit 3 Exam.  I have finished marking all the exams and I am very impressed with how well our class did on this exam.  The class average was in the 80's which is absolutely amazing.  Well done everyone!

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed and did some circuit training before playing a few games.  In Science we continued to learn about Food Chains and Food Webs and the students actually created their own food web in the middle of our classroom.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health and they went over their exams from last week before beginning their Humility Assignment.

What We Learned Today...November 15th

This morning we switched things up a bit.  Instead of AR, the students in our class headed around to each room around the school to speak with classes about our upcoming fundraiser next week.  I was so impressed with how great a job everyone did pumping up the rest of our school.  I'm sure next week is going to be a huge success as a result of all their work.  Good job grade 7/8s!  From 9:38 - 10:38 we had the first half of our well deserved AR movie party and the students relaxed and watched the movie "Monsters University".  Instead of French today, we had Religion and the students spent the hour completing their fundraiser posters and then hung them up around the school.

After lunch they had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they completed their Twin Portrait Assignments and began working on a Twin Portrait Painting Response.  At 1:38 we spent half hour finishing up our AR movie party.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and they began their Fully Alive unit. The notes for this unit went home with the students today.

What We Learned Today...November 14th

Working on their fundraiser posters!

We kicked off our day today with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  Speaking of AR, the student's will have their well deserved AR Movie party tomorrow morning to celebrate reaching their goal for the second consecutive month.  Well done everyone!  In ELA we compared the heroic traits displayed by Perseus, Jason and Theseus from their respective myths.  Students were also given an assignment at the end of class that tasks them with finding a video on youtube that represents heroism and identifying the heroic traits present.  We will continue to work on this during class tomorrow and students will present on Monday.

In Grade 8 Math the students were given an outline of what is on their Unit Exam as well as what to study to help from prepare.  I highly recommend that students use the chapter review and practice test from their textbook as well as their quiz to help them study for the exam. During this period we also began to look at Unit 4.1 "Representing Percents".  The students began working on an assignment from their textbook that is posted at the bottom of this post.

After lunch we had French and officially started our new "Voyager" unit by reviewing weather and seasons.  At 1:23 we moved on to Religion and students volunteered for different jobs for our upcoming "Teacher Make-Over" fundraiser to help the victims in the Philippines. Next week classrooms will be raising money and the top three classes will be able to select the staff member of their choice and dress them up at our Month End Assembly.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies Mr. Csada.

What We Learned Today...November 13th

This morning we started out our day with AR from 9:08 to 9:38 before moving on to Religion. We took a small hiatus from our Saint Research Assignment today to work on a special project that is very relevant to Canadians and especially our Deshaye community. As a class we've been given the opportunity to plan and run a school fundraiser that will help support the victims of the recent typhoon in the Philippines. To start the class we discussed the different ways people and groups over time have helped support victims of disaster. Students then broke up into small discussion groups and brainstormed different ways that we could show our support and lead our school community.  At the end of the period groups took turns sharing their idea's and we will select one of the ideas in class tomorrow and begin planning our fundraiser.

In Grade 8 Math the students had the hour to complete their 3.5 assignment, which is due tomorrow.  Students also continued to work on their unit review and practice test from the textbook.  In a surprise decision, I have bumped the Unit exam from tomorrow to Monday, November 18th to give the students a little bit more time to prepare.  Students, make sure you are using this extra time wisely and are studying for your exam far enough in advance and not just "cramming" the night before.

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they continued to work on multiple skills and movement patterns associated with Volleyball.  At 1:23 we had Science and students received their quizzes back.  We spent some time going through the quiz results so students had a chance to correct any mistakes they made.  They were also given five minutes at the end of class to argue any extra marks they felt they deserved.  Needless to say, The Honourable Judge Bresciani handed out a few extra marks.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada.

What We Learned Today...November 12th

Working on their Twin Portraits!
This morning we headed to the gym as soon as the students arrived for our usual beginning of the week assembly. However, today was a quite different from previous assembly's because the focus for today was on Remembrance Day.  I would like to thank Ms. Steranko, her students and our two Grade 8's who played the "Last Post" on their trumpets for doing such a wonderful job today.

Once we got back to the classroom the students had a brief AR period before beginning ELA.  In ELA the students learned about the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur through the amazing (and not at all corny) animated short.  Students were also given a few response questions following the cartoon that will help them with our lesson tomorrow about heroes.

In Grade 8 Math the students were given the entire hour to complete their 3.5 assignments as well as work on their unit review and practice test from the text book.  *Students, don't forget that the 3.5 assignment is due on Thursday, November 14th as is our Unit 3 Exam.  Make sure that you fill out your Unit 3 study chart as you will be able to bring this into the test with you.

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed and they spent the hour painting their Twin Portrait Assignments.  At 1:38 the students had Science and wrote their Ecosystems quiz for the period.  During the last hour of the day they had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they worked on various volleyball skills.

What We Learned Today...November 8th

Well the day finally came! Today was the final day for the students to reach their AR goal of 10 AR points per student if they wanted to have another AR movie party.  With all the results now in, I am pleased to announce that our class has once again exceeded our goal!.  For the month of October we officially earned 292.2 AR Points as a class, which averages to 10.4 AR points per student.  Well done everyone!

In ELA the students were given the entire hour to type of their final copies of the Percy vs. Perseus paragraphs.  These assignments will be due on Tuesday, November 12th.  Students, don't forget you will need to hand in all steps of the writing process along with your final copy.

In Grade 8 Math we continued to learn how to apply the "Pythagorean Relationship" to problem solving questions involving right triangles.  Students also began to work on their 3.5 assignment, "Applying the Pythagorean Relationship".  This assignment will be due on Wednesday, November 13th.  *Don't forget we will be having our Unit 3 Exam on Thursday, November 14th.

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they At 1:23 we had Science and the students were treated to a guest speaker to teach them about plants. This man was none other than Mr. Bill Nye the Science Guy! For the half hour we watched the Bill Nye episode about Plants and the students completed a brief handout as they watched.  During the last hour of the day the students had Health with Ms. Zwingli and they wrote their test on relationships.

What We Learned Today...November 7th

We started out our day with AR from 9:08 to 9:38 before moving on to ELA.  In ELA the students continued to peer edit their Perseus vs. Percy Jackson Paragraphs. Students will need to complete the editing process tonight if they didn't finish today as we will be working on our good copies during class tomorrow.  During this hour I also continued meeting with students about their first term goals.  I've got through about two thirds of the class so far and should be able to finish up in ELA tomorrow.
At 10:53 the band students headed to Leboldus for Full Band so the rest of the class had the hour to work on their ELA or Religion assignments.

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they continued to work on their Twin Portrait Assignments.  I have to say, I'm very impressed with how wonderful these projects are progressing and I can't wait to see the final product!  In Religion students were given the period to continue to work on their Saint Research Assignment.  Most students have finished the research portion of the assignment and have now moved on to their poster or other project that will demonstrate what they learned.  . What We Learned Today...November 6th

We spent time reviewing student goals from the beginning of the year today.

This morning we began our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  The students have continued to do an excellent job with AR as we are now up to 8.7  points per student.  With just under a week left, the students only need 1.3 more points to earn their movie party. This is definitely an attainable goal and I'm positive we'll make it as long as everyone continues to do their part!  In ELA the students spent the hour peer editing their Percy vs. Perseus paragraphs.  During this time I also started meeting with students individually about the goals they set for the first term.  Together we looked at their goals and compared them to their present marks in all the subjects I teach.  Through looking at their marks we discussed their strengths in each subject as well as areas they can look to build on for the next term.  I will be continuing to meet with students tomorrow during ELA as well.

In Grade 8 Math we spent the first half of class going through the quizzes the students wrote yesterday.  I was very impressed with the marks on these quizzes as they were very well done for the most part.  The second half of class was spent working on the assignment from 3.4, which will be due on Tuesday, November 12th.

After lunch we had Religion and the students were given the entire period to work on their Saint Research Assignment.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and they continued to work on their test from yesterday's class.

The students worked on Volleyball in Phys. Ed today!

Unfortunately I was away at an appointment this morning but the students were very fortunate to have Ms. Ellis as their substitute teacher this morning! They started out their day with AR from 9:08 to 9:38 before moving on to ELA.  During the next hour the students continued to work on the rough draft for their Percy vs Perseus Assignment.  Students need to have their rough draft complete for tomorrows class as we will be doing peer editing for the entire hour.  In Grade 8 Math the students wrote their Unit 3 quizzes on Squares, Square Roots and the Pythagorean Theorem.

After lunch the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and continued to work different movement patterns and skills associated with volleyball.  At 1:23 we had French and the students spent the rest of the period working on their Unit 1 exam.  During the last hour of the day Mr. Csada popped by for Social Studies and the students wrote their Social Studies quiz.

Working on their Twin Portrait Projects.

This morning we started out our week with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  We are now up to 6.7 AR Points Per Student and only need 3.3 more points to reach our goal! With just over a week left I'm sure we'll be able to reach our class goal of 10 AR Points.  Keep up the good work everyone!

In ELA we spent some time going through the Perseus and Medusa assignments before moving on to the Percy vs. Perseus Paragraphs.  Students were given the rest of the class to work on the brainstorming/drafting stages of the assignment. This assignment will be due on Tuesday, November 12th.  Don't forget you will need to hand in all stages of the Writing Process in with your good copy.

At 11:00 we headed to the gym for an All Saints Day liturgy.  A special thanks to Ms. Steranko and Ms. Kalynchuck as well as their classes for preparing such a wonderful liturgy!

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Postma and they began to paint their Twin Portrait Assignments.  In Religion, we began a new assignment that tied in perfectly with our liturgy this morning.  For this assignment students are tasked with researching a Patron Saint and then present the imformation using the method of their choice (poster, essay, glog, prezi, slideshow, video etc.).  We will be working on this assignment for the rest of the week and I will post a due date early next week.  During the last hour of the day the students had Phys. Ed with Mr. Fuchs and they worked on various volleyball skills.
