What We Learned Today...May 30th

Enjoying their slupries!!

This morning we started out the day a little differently as we started our RAD tests right at 9:00 instead of the usual AR period.  The students spent the entire hour and half writing their exams with some students actually finishing their exams! Students will also have Monday's ELA class to finish up their RAD Exams, which is just in time to start the Math Diagnostic!  Speaking of the Math Diagnostic, we used our Math class today to review some of the key concepts from our year to help the students study for the exam next week.  We will also be spending Monday's class reviewing all the concepts we learned this year to help keep the concepts fresh for the Diagnostic.

After lunch Mr. Fuchs stopped by for Phys. Ed and took the students outside to play some Ultimate Frisbee. At 1:23 the students and I headed over to 7-11 to enjoy some much needed slurpies as a reward for such a great week!  During the last hour of the day we headed to the gym for our Month End Assembly and we learned all about the Space Tomatoes that Ms. Thurmeier's class have been growing over the past month.

Testing the Density of a Cylinder!
This morning we started out the day with a quick AR period before we headed to the gym for the Grade 6 band concert. They did an excellent job and put on an excellent show for the entire school. Well done guys!  At 10:00 we came back to the classroom and the students utilized the rest of the hour by working on their Children's Picture Books.  In Grade 8 Math we began looking at 10.4 which also deals with Solving Two-Step Equations.  Since some of the class is having a little difficulty with these concepts, I have decided to postpone the Unit 10 Exam until Monday so we can have a couple extra days to practice the skills.

After Lunch Mr. Fuchs took the students outside for Phys. Ed, where they continued to learn different drills and skills associated with Lacrosse.  At 1:23 we had Science and we learned more about density by testing the density of different objects using the water displacement method.  During the last hour of the day Ms. Zenuk popped in for Career Guidance and the students continued to work on their resumes.

One of the many creative book covers!
After the students "tweeted" the answer to the bellwork question "If you could have one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?" we had a half hour of silent reading period.  In ELA, students continued to work on their Children's Picture Books over the hour.  Just to give you an idea of how great these books are turning out, here's a few of the titles so far: The Baseball Turtle, Lolas Big Adventure, The Guardian Angel and Broccoli is Evil. At 10:53 the students had an extra hour to complete any homework they had as well as study for their Arts. Ed Test.

In the afternoon Ms. Postma stopped by for Arts. Ed and the students wrote their dance unit exam.  At 1:38 the students earned a much needed break after all their hard work today so we took a walk to 7-11 for some refreshing slurpies.  During the last hour of the day the students had Career Guidance with Ms. Zenuk and they began to look at Resumes.

Working hard on their books!

This morning we began the day with a half hour period of silent reading until 9:38.  In ELA the students continued to plan and write their Children's Storybook assignment.  As I said yesterday, I've been really impressed with the amount of creativity in our room with this assignment and I can't wait to see the final product.  We might have some future children's authors in our class!!  In Grade 8 Math we continued to work our way through Unit 10 by quickly reviewing 10.2 before looking at 10.3.

After lunch the students headed outside for Phys. Ed and they learned some more skills associated with Lacrosse.  At 1:23 we had Science and learned how to determine Density of irregular shaped objects using displacement.  We then put our knowledge to the test by heading outside to complete a  density lab.  During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and they worked on their Culture Fair presentations.

At the Mitch Dorge Presentation

We kicked off our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  In ELA we briefly reviewed key concepts we've learned so far in our Creative Writing Unit before moving on to the major writing assignment.  For this assignment, students have been tasked with writing and illustrating their very own children's storybook.  Today they spent most of the class working on their outline and brainstorming characters, conflicts, resolutions etc.  It was really cool to see how engaged the students were in this assignment and I can't wait to see how these stories turn out over the next week. In Grade 8 Math we went through the test from yesterday and then moved on to 10.2 "Solving Two-Step Equations".

After lunch the students had a brief AR class before heading to the gym for a special presentation from Mitch Dorge who talked to the students about issues facing teenagers today such as drugs, alcohol and bullying.

Playing some Telephone Pictionary

Today in ELA we continued looking at types of conflict and spent some time sharing the different examples the students found in the fairy tale, Snow White.  Over the hour we also had a chance to investigate the different types of Narrative Point of Views as well as the importance of understanding perspective when writing.  To wrap up the hour the students got into groups and participated in a couple games of Telephone Pictionary, which tied in perfectly with our lesson on perspective!  In Grade 8 Math the students spent the hour writing their Unit 9 Exam.  We will be moving on to 10.2 tomorrow, so students be sure to watch the video tonight! http://goo.gl/INV6Vt

After lunch Mr. Fuchs took the students to the gym for Phys. This morning we started out our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  At 9:38 we switched things up a bit and Mr. Csada stopped by to teach an extra Social Studies lesson because Social Studies was cancelled this afternoon due to the dissection.  In Grade 8 Math we began Unit 10, which focuses on solving linear equations. While we have moved on to a new unit, don't forget we still have our Unit 9 Exam next Wednesday.  So students, be sure to start studying a little bit each night to make sure you get the best possible mark on your exam!

After lunch we headed to the gym for your Squid Dissection!  We were very fortunate to have Mr. Zawislak join us this afternoon as he guided the students through their dissections.  A special thanks to Mr. Csada for organizing our afternoon and to Zawislak family for volunteering their time and sharing their expertise with us!

What We Learned Today...May 14th

Today was a bit of a crazy day as all our track athletes boarded the bus first thing this morning and left our class a little empty.  To solve this problem we invited the remaining students from Ms. Zenuk's class to join us for the morning.  Students used this time to work on any assignments or homework they had, which included the Culture Fair assignment in Social Studies as well as an current Math assignments.

After lunch I had to head over to Miller for a BYOT meeting and the students were very fortunate to have Ms. Bohay as their teacher this afternoon.  In Phys. Ed they headed to the gym and participated in a cool game that was described as a mix between handball and soccer (which sounds pretty sweet!).  At 1:23 they had Religion and were given the entire period to complete their Symbols of Hope assignment which is due tomorrow.  During the last hour of the day Mr. Csada stopped by for Social Studies and the students continued to work on their Culture Fair presentations.

Doing some creative writing
We kicked off our day today with a half hour period of AR before moving to ELA.  Since we have completed our mini unit on Essay Writing and (most) students have handed in their Persuasive Essays, we moved on to our next mini unit which will focus on Creative Writing.  To kick off this unit, we did a quick creative writing activity where the students started a story then passed it to the person behind them tand switched every 30 seconds until the stories were complete.  We then discussed the four important parts of a story as well as the different areas on the plot diagram.  In Grade 8 Math the students continued to work on the assignment for 9.3, which is the final assignment for this unit.  Since this unit has come to a close this means our Unit Exam isn't very far away and we've selected Wednesday, May 21st as the day to write it.

After lunch Ms. Postma stopped by for Arts. Ed and they spent the class watching the iPad movies of their Jai Ho dances.  At 1:38 we had Science and we quickly talked about Temperature and Viscosity before looking Density and how to find it.  During the last period of the day the students headed to the gym with Mr. Fuchs and they worked on a few Track and Field events.

This morning we started off our day with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38.  We're already up to 6.2 AR points per student, which is absolutely amazing considering that we've only been back for a week and a half.  Keep up the good work!  At 9:38 the students wrote their Queens University Survey for the hour and the students who were not writing worked on their Persuasive Essays.  Students, don't forget that this assignment is now due on Monday and you must have all drafts handed in.  In Grade 8 Math we spent the hour writing the Unit 8 Exams on Integers.

After lunch we had French and the students were split up into their groups and began working on their Radio Advertisement assignment.  This assignment can be found by following the previous hyperlink or going to the French tab at the top of the blog. What We Learned Today...May 7th

We started off our morning a little differently than usual as we headed down to the Kindergarten room right after announcements.  Once we got there, the Grade 7/8's partnered up with their little buddies and headed around the school on a letter scavenger hunt.  The senior students did such a great job again with the kindergartens and I know Ms. Sutherland and her class really appreciated having our class help out!  In Grade 8 Math the students worked on the assignment for 9.2 which deals with looking for patterns in a table of values as well as creating expressions from a table of values.

After lunch the students headed to the gym with Mr. Fuchs for Phys. Ed and they continued working on High Jump. At 1:23 we had French and the students were placed into groups for a mid unit project that tasks them with creating a Radio Advertisement on the location of their choice.  The advertisements need to include the name of the location, climate, activities, and foods that would be found there.  Students will be using the iPads and other technology to create their advertisements so I can't wait to see listen to the projects when they are completed.   During the last hour of the day the students had Social Studies with Mr. Csada and they spent some time going through their landmark assignments before discussing the Culture Fair.

The Flipped Math Crew!
We kicked of our morning today with the usual AR period from 9:08 to 9:38 before moving on to the Persuasive Essays in ELA.  Students had the entire hour to edit and revise the third drafts of their essays.  Those students who were on their final draft were asked to mark their own essay using the rubric provided at the beginning of the unit so they could see what level they were at before turning it in.  Due to the Queens University Survey, we will be losing an ELA class on Thursday which means that the due date for this assignment has been bumped back to Monday, May 12th.  In Grade 8 Math we officially started Unit 9, which deals with graphing and linear relations.

Working hard in Arts. Ed
After lunch Ms. Postma stopped by for Arts. Ed and the students worked on their dance notations as well as a sketchbook assignment on the topic of their choice.  At 1:38 we had Religion and briefly went through the assignment on the four gospels from last class before starting a project about symbols of hope in our world. The students were quite happy with the way we started our day today as we spent the first half hour finishing up our AR movie from yesterday.  Once the movie ended, the students got straight to work on editing their Dystopian Persuasive Essays.  I was really impressed  again with how hard the students worked on their essays today.  Keep up the good work!  At 10:53 we had French and continued our Voyager unit by looking the the verbs: "Jouer", "Prendre", "Voyager" "Aller" and "Rester" and their conjugations.  We also looked at different activities you might take while on a vacation.

After lunch Ms. Posta stopped by for Arts. Ed and the students finished up filming their dances and also worked on another sketchbook assignment.  In Religion we reviewed the four gospel stories about Jesus' resurrection before looking at how Jesus is a symbol of Hope for us.  The students then were given a brief assignment asking them to create or find images of a symbol(s) of Hope in our world.  During the last hour of the day we headed to the gym for the Month end assembly.
