What We Learned Today...May 14th

Working on their Solar Oven.

This morning we started our day out with our usual AR period from 9:00 - 9:30 before moving on to ELA.  As was mentioned yesterday, today the students were split up into teams of 4 and were given a task: create a solar powered oven that can generate the most heat. In order to complete this, teams were given the following supplies: a shoebox, cellophane sheets, aluminum foil, construction paper and tape.  At the start of the activity I showed the students one example of how they could complete this task, but left everything up to the teams to decide.  I was really amazed in the various ways that each group constructed their ovens.  What was even more interesting was that out of the 8 groups there were no repeat designs, which really shows the amount of creativity we have in our classroom.  As the period drew to a close today, all groups were still in the middle of the building stage for this assignment so we will continue this lesson tomorrow.  We have to hope that the weather cooperates tomorrow so we will be able to measure the temperature in each oven and see which team constructed the best Solar Powered Oven! *Remember if you would like to try and cook something in your oven, bring it tomorrow!

In Grade 8 Math the students were given the entire class to work on the 8.4 handout they were assigned yesterday.  If students finished early they were able to get a head start on their assignment for next class: Pg. 297: 6 ,8, 10, 12, 23 and Pg. 310: 5, 7, 9, 11, 19.

After lunch the students had Arts. Ed with Ms. Norris and continued to record their Broadcast Radio Plays.  At 1:15 Mr. Csada came in and taught Science. (I'm not entirely sure what was covered today because I was away for Mimio training this afternoon)  During the last hour of the day the students worked on their North Korea current event assignment from yesterday.  If students finished early they logged on to their IXL accounts and completed some extra math practice questions.
