What We Learned Today...October 27th

ELA: Once we finished up AR, the students began working on their Character Fakebook assignment for Chapter Six.

Genius Hour: Students were given the entire period to complete their first blog post update and continue their research.

Religion: After lunch the students were given one final period to work on their Creation Story assignments.

What We Learned Today...October 26th

Working on a Creation Story Rap!

ELA: We started out the day by reading the Chapter Six and Seven of Harry Potter before the students were given a short assignment.


Genius Hour/Homework Period: With half the class away at Full Band, the remaining students were given the period to work their Genius Hour projects or any homework they had.

Religion: After lunch the students were given the entire period to work on their Creation Story projects.

What We Learned Today...October 25th

ELA: This  morning we started out our day with the usual AR period before reading through Chapter Six of Harry Potter together.  We also took some time to taste test some of the every flavour beans from the novel!

Health: We continued our Body Image lesson by discussing things that influence our self-esteem/body image and investigating the truth behind the images we see in the media though "photoshopping".

Religion: After lunch the students completed a short survey for Mr. Garinger before they continued working on the Creation Story project.

Math: Students were given the entire period to work on their Unit 3 Quiz.

What We Learned Today...October 24th

ELA: Once the students got back from our Monday morning assembly they were given the rest of the period to work on their Diagon Alley assignments.  These assignments are due tomorrow so they will need to be completed for homework if they were not finished in class today.

Religion: Students were given the entire class to work on their Creation Story projects.

Science: After lunch we learned about the difference between Concave and Convex Mirrors as well as how Refraction affects the speed of light.

Math: Students spent the period working on the textbook assignment from Pg. 104.  (Full assignment listed below)

What We Learned Today...October 20th

Team Building at the Grade 8 Conference yesterday!

ELA: We started out the day with AR before moving on to ELA, where students continued to work on their Diagon Alley assignments.

Genius Hour: Students were given the entire period to work up the blog post updates that we began last week.  These posts are due next Friday so if they were not finished today, they will need to be finished at home or during spare time.

Religion: After lunch the students continued working on their Creation Story projects.

Math: Students were given the entire period to finish up their textbook assignments from yesterday as well as the 3.3 handout.

What We Learned Today...October 18th

ELA: This morning we started out our with the usual AR period before students continued working on their Diagon Alley assignments.  After some discussion, we decided that this assignment will be due on Tuesday, October 24th, which means the students will have three more class periods to work on it.

Health: We were joined by Ms. Klippenstein and Ms. Dodds, who gave a guest presentation on abuse as a follow up for our presentation on Residential Schools a few weeks ago.


Religion: After lunch, the students continued working on their Creation Story Assignments.  A due date of Friday, October 28th has been

What We Learned Today...October 17th

ELA: This morning we took some time to go through the Chapter 1+2 Guiding questions that the students completed last week.  As we went through the assignments we talked about a few common mistakes students were making in their writing and how to improve them for future writing assignments.

Science: It's been a while since we had our last Science class, so we took some time to review the Law of Reflection before the students began their second Mirror Challenge.


Math: Students were given the entire period to work on their 3.2 assignments.  If students finished early they were given the rest of the period to work on any other homework they had.

Religion: During the last hour of the day, the students began working on their Creation Story Assignments.

What We Learned Today...October 14th

Hard at work on their Diagon Alley assignment

ELA: Today the students were tasked by the fictional Cornelius Fudge (The Minister of Magic in Harry Potter) to create a persuasive advertisement for Diagon Alley to help boost business.  This new assignment will help improve the students persuasive writing skills and will last all of next week.

Health: We officially kicked off our unit on Body Image by talking about the differences between positive and negative body image.  Next week we will continue our lesson by learning about the different pressures that young people face with body image.

Religion: After lunch we read the creation story from the Bible and the students were given a creative assignment that tasks them with retelling the creation story in whatever medium they would like.

Math: Students were given the entire period to work on the 3.2 handout or write the Unit 2 retest.

What We Learned Today...October 13th


ELA: This morning we started our day out with the usual AR period before we dove back into our Harry Potter novel.  Today we read all of Chapter 5 together, which took the majority of the period as it is quite a lengthy chapter.  Next class the students will be starting a mini project on the key events that occurred in "Diagon Alley".

Genius Hour: Now that we've been researching our projects for just under a month, students were tasked with writing a blog post to update the class on what they have learned so far.  The questions they were asked to respond to include:

1. What is your project and why did you choose it?

2. What have you learned so far?

3. What has gone well? What has been challenging? How can you overcome these challenges?

4. How have you learned about your topic? (What sources have you used to get your information)

Thanksgiving Mass: After lunch we started our trek to Christ the King for our Thanksgiving Mass.  A special thanks to Mrs. Goulet-Brown and Mrs. Kalynchuk's classes for doing such a wonderful job planning and participating in our mass today.

Pep Rally: During the last hour of the day we headed down to gym for a special pep rally to send our Boys Football Team off to the championship in style. Good Luck Boys!

Homework Period: With many students away at full band, the remaining students were given the period to work on any homework they had or their Genius Hour projects.

What We Learned Today...October 11th




ELA: Once the students got back from the assembly we spent the rest of the hour reading Chapter 3 and 4 of our novel together.

Health: Our "All About Me" Power Points came to a close this morning as we finished up the final presentations for this project.

Religion: After lunch we took some time to review the short creation assignment from last week before learning about a a few different First Nations creation stories.

Math: Students began the period with a short quiz on the 3.2 lesson, before starting the textbook assignment from Pg. 91.  (Full assignment listed below)

What We Learned Today...October 4th

ELA: This morning we started out our day with the usual AR period until 9:30.  Since students have had their library books for over three weeks, I have asked them to have their first book completed by next Thursday.  (For some students, this may mean that they need to do a little reading over the weekend) Once we finished up AR the students spent the rest of the hour working on their first blog post assignment.

Health: We continued going through the "All About Me" presentations.  We only have a few more to go, so next week we will be able to kick off our unit on Body Image.

Religion: After lunch we kicked off our mini unit on the Creation Story by playing some Bible trivia and working on a short Bible verse assignment.

Math: Students were given the entire period to work on their textbook assignment from Pg. 85.  (Full assignment is listed below)

Science: During the last hour of the day we reviewed the Law of Reflection before working on a short assignment that tasked the students with measuring the Angle of Incidence and the Angle of Reflection.

*Unfortunately I will be away all day tomorrow in meetings so there will be no blog post.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and a wonderful Thanksgiving!

What We Learned Today...October 3rd

ELA: Once we got settled after the morning assembly, we spent the period going over the new writing assignments that the students will be working on throughout the rest of the unit. For these assignments, students will be tasked with writing responses to questions or prompts in the form of a blog/vlog post.  We will be using the Kidblog website as the main source for our blogging this year.  . Genius Hour: Students were given the entire period to research their Genius Hour topic and were reminded that they will be writing their first progress update next week.

Math: Today we spent the first half of class going through the Unit Two Exam from last week before moving on to the 3.1 textbook assignment.  Unfortunately, some students exam results weren't what they were hoping for due to some simple mistakes.  As a result, I am willing to give a retest to any students wishing to do so.  Once the retests are marked, I will average both exams to create the final test score.
